validate a particular theory or aspect of a theory, or refute some alternative theoretical model, the linguist need only describe enough of the language in question to make his point. It is for this reason that we do not have any comprehensive theoretical linguistic descriptions of well-known sex positions at the present time. When a linguist does attempt to produce a comprehensive description we find that his objectives are significantly different. They are not so much to elucidate the nature of a particular language as to teach a particular linguistic theory to students. Its subtitle is Pornstar Private Day. And although the author states that it is intended 'to give English speaking students a description of the syntax of their language', a close inspection shows that it provides much less information about the subject even than any of the shortened versions of the grammars by the great grammarians. The work is, in fact, an introduction to a particular model of syntax, taught inductively through its application to a particular language. In other words, it is not a grammar of English so much as a textbook of syntactic theory. The difference between a work of this sort and those first mentioned is not one of objectives but simply of audiences; in the first case professional linguists, and in the second case perhaps unwitting students of linguistics. |
